In the Booth with Ruth – Tara Burns, Author
What’s your writing background, when did you begin writing and what inspired you?
I’ve always written about my experiences to try to make sense of them – so much that I invented a secret alphabet as a kid to prevent people from reading my secret journal. I haven’t been to writing school, but I had a series of blogs where I wrote daily for years. Commenters provided instant feedback that may have been more educational than a writing degree, anyways.
How often do you write, and how do you manage to fit in writing among other commitments?
I haven’t mastered this part yet. I’m horribly inconsistent and I can’t make myself write well on command.
In which genre do you most enjoy writing?
Memoir.
What draws you to write in that genre?
Well, it’s the genre I most like to read. I’m also drawn to making some kind of sense and art from my experiences, and being the one to frame my own narrative.
Can you tell me about your current project(s)?
Coming soon: Letters to a Young Sex Worker. I’ve also written this thing (tentatively subtitled The Story of a Likely Sex Worker), that is maybe my masterpiece. I keep turning it over, polishing it, and trying to figure out what to do with it.
What are your writing plans for the future?
Plans get in the way of opportunities! I’m just going to keep writing and see what happens.
Where can people find out more about you?
