What’s your writing background? When did you begin writing and what inspired you?
I am a medical doctor and until recently my writing was strictly professional. However gradually I started to write information about medical subjects for the general public that immediately generated enthusiastic reactions. This encouraged me to write more and start writing books.
How often do you write? And how do you manage to fit in writing among other commitments?
I have become quite committed to my mission of educating non-medical professionals with important items that I feel they should know about their health and well-being. This has resulted in daily writing. I find that the nice thing about writing is that you can do it any time of the day and anywhere. So for me it is quite a flexible activity and I can combine this quite nicely with the pleasures of living in the Southern Spanish climate.
In which genre do you most enjoy writing?
So far I have only written about preventive health care with the emphasis on what people themselves can do to improve their health and life expectations. Often little changes in lifestyle and diet can make huge differences and make one feel healthier nearly immediately and in addition live many years longer.
What draws you to write in that genre?
We are facing enormous health care challenges with two-thirds of most Western populations overweight, half of the population over 50 suffering from hypertension and rapidly increasing rates of cancer and dementia to name a few problems. All these problems are currently mostly only addressed by an increasing usage of medicines and increased hospitalization while most of these health problems can simply be prevented.
Can you tell me about your current project(s)?
My newly released book ‘Living a Century or More’ shows people how to add many years to their lives while being and feeling much healthier, based on published research in the most renowned medical journals.
We all like to live healthier, but it is often not known what is healthy and what is not. Also doctors often are not aware that very simple changes in lifestyle and diet can result in large improvements in health and life expectancy. For example, simply changing the type and amount of carbohydrates in your diet has an important relation with your risk for diabetes. Avoiding diabetes at age 50 increases our life expectancy with eight years while enjoying a much better health.
Daily consumption of a small amount of dark chocolate is as effective for treating high blood pressure as an antihypertensive drug and certain mental and physical activities like dancing and crossword puzzles can dramatically reduce our chances of suffering dementia. Taking certain food supplements such as omega-3 and vitamin D have shown to decrease our risks for cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
On the contrary the often praised antioxidants, which are also present in the widely popular multivitamins, increase our risks for a heart attack and cancer. It has also been shown that coffee and tea are about the best beverages that you can drink and daily consumption will increase your life expectancy.
What are your writing plans for the future?
Currently I am writing a book with the title ‘Goodbye Sugar High’ about the root causes of obesity and the real solutions. Being overweight and suffering obesity has become an unprecedented epidemic in societies all over the world. So far fasting diets, medications and even surgery have proven unsuccessful and have dramatically failed at achieving normalizations of bodyweights. In many Western societies two-thirds of the population suffers from being overweight or obese and in developing countries like China the incidence is rapidly on the rise. Being overweight and obesity are associated with severe diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and dementia.
Existing advice is often one-liners such as “eat less,” “stop being lazy and exercise more,” “eat less fat,” “stop eating wheat,” “avoid junk food,” “try a fasting diet,” etc. What all this advice has in common is that it does not address the real problem.
It is quite remarkable that the human has managed to avoid being overweight for over 2 million years without even knowing what calories were and without fasting diets. So what is going on? Why have our bodyweights been going ballistic for about 40 years?
The book ‘Goodbye Sugar High’ analyses the root causes of the problem and offers effective solutions based on addressing the real issues without the necessity of counting calories or sticking to fasting diets.
