In the Booth with Ruth – Gladys Lawson, Author
What’s your writing background? When did you begin writing and what inspired you?
I started writing years ago. I remember wining a poetry competition when I was about five years old. The poem was about a spider; the first two lines are: The spider spins a web so high, Through the trees and to the sky… Writing books professionally started years ago, I was managing a singing artist at the time and the realities of trying to get a record deal (which we eventually got with an independent label) really hit home. I started writing my first novel ‘Despite All Odds: A Dream Fulfilled’ around this period. The novel is about the music industry and fulfilling one’s dreams, I added some murder, mystery and romance, which I had a lot of fun with.
How often do you write? And how do you manage to fit in writing among other commitments?
I used to write every day but now I jot down important thoughts everyday and write more over the weekends. I still work full time and have two great teenage children, which means that I am really busy during the week so being able to set time aside over the weekend, mainly Saturday, is great.
In which genre do you most enjoy writing?
I don’t really categorise what I write about. I love writing about important issues but structuring them in ways that people can relate to. I write mysteries, thrillers, suspense and romance – sometimes all in the same book.
What draws you to write in that way?
The need to tell a story in a way that will make a difference to people – and, hopefully get them to think about what they have just read.
Can you tell me about your current project(s)?
‘Blood Borne Connections’ is a book about sex trafficking and the mafia. It tells a story of love and the lack of love in people and it makes you wonder how some people can behave so evilly. It also tells a story of survival, of determination and of hope.
What are your writing plans for the future?
I am currently in the middle of my fourth book. It is about suicide and what happens to people after they kill themselves and what happens to their loved ones after they die. It is very emotional but also very potent. If you look at the papers – everyday someone commits suicide. My book ‘Murder Within – Sui Caedare’ takes you in and out of the lives of the dead and their families – some of the dead don’t know they’re dead!
