In the Booth with Ruth – Jill Dobbe, Author

Jill Dobbe

What’s your writing background? When did you begin writing and what inspired you?

I really only began writing three years ago when I decided to write down my story of living and teaching overseas.  I had a lot of memories stored up to tell readers about so the writing came pretty easy to me.  I was also used to people asking questions about my unusual lifestyle and was sure that there would be an audience among educators, adventurists, travelers with or without kids, and memoir enthusiasts.

How often do you write? And how do you manage to fit in writing among other commitments?

I attempt to write a little each day, but as I work full time as an elementary administrator in an American International school I don’t always have the time.  I do however, keep a journal nearby where I write memories and ideas down that just come to me and which I can use in my next memoir.

In which genre do you most enjoy writing?

I enjoy writing travel memoirs because travel and living overseas is what I know about.  Also, it is the genre that I most enjoy reading in my free time, which also helps me in writing my own memoir.

What draws you to write in that genre?

Travelling is my life and I love it.  I have seen and experienced so much from living in seven different countries.  I enjoy sharing the stories that I have accumulated about the different cultures, the strange ways of life, and the unforeseen adventures that I have experienced firsthand.

Can you tell me about your current project(s)?

I am currently writing my second travel memoir, which will be about our adventures while teaching and living in India, Egypt, Honduras, and wherever we find ourselves living next.  In this memoir, I hope to also write more about the schools that we worked in.  Some of the international schools we worked in were quite unique in themselves and there is a lot of information about them that might interest readers who want to know more about teaching in overseas schools.

What are your writing plans for the future?

My second memoir will take me several years to write as I am still living it. I plan to work on it slowly, get feedback from friends, family, and other authors, and possibly enter parts of it in travel writing contests.

Another fascinating interview, Ruth. India and Egypt should make really interesting subjects, Jill – looking forward to it.
