In the Booth with Ruth – Craig Douglas, Author

What’s your writing background? When did you begin writing and what inspired you?

A boy of fourteen began to flourish when given English homework. It was the creative kind that made me explode with ideas. My teacher inspired me when she said I had talent. I’ve got her to thank for that. In my 20s and 30s it has been hit and miss due to a frenetic time in the army, but now I’m out it’s even more hectic.

How often do you write? And how do you manage to fit in writing among other commitments?

To be quite honest, I don’t write as often as I’d like to. I’m doing an Open University degree and a health and safety diploma so I don’t have much time for anything else apart from the odd hundred-word flash and blog post now and again.

In which genre do you most enjoy writing?

When I was a kid I was interested in fantasy, and Dungeons and Dragons, but I mostly write about the gritty, noir, contemporary and ugly world we live in. No, I don’t write specifically about crime, though a lot of crime is committed in my work it’s usually on a more morally challenging level.

What draws you to write in that genre?

I suppose two decades in the army sort of fucks all the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy out of you. I saw all the fantastic and surreal stuff in the military.

Can you tell me about your current project(s)?

When I find the time, I’m converting my war diary into present tense – pain in the arse and a slow process.

What are your writing plans for the future?

After obtaining a degree and diploma in health and safety, I’ll write some work over 50,000 words and see how that pans out. I want to expand from short stories.

Where can people find out more about you?

There’s Gritfiction at… wait for it…. I also convert work to kindle, you know? I’m dirt cheap, but not free. I was free, but some people took the piss. Can I put that in the booth? Kindle Conversion £0.0005 per word or $0.0008.

I also run an online fiction site with Darren Sant
